The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has completed a rulemaking, upgrading the rear underride guard standards on newly-manufactured trailers and semitrailers with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or more. Previous Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) called for rear underride guards to withstand a 30 mph impact from a passenger car, in which 50% of the width of the passenger motor vehicle overlaps the rear of the trailer or semitrailer.
